Activities

There are many events held within the kingdom throughout the year as well as inter-kingdom events to attend. While a detailed explanation of every event would easily become an overwhelming read, a few of the major recurring events are listed here:

War

Interkingdom wars are hosted by every Kingdom in the Known World. These are large camping events that usually last at least a week. People from many Kingdoms will travel to the site, camp together, fight together, and frolic together. There are usually vendors and merchants selling food, drink, and other wares, as well as a variety of classes and workshops to attend. There will be large group battles on the fields of combat, official Court business may be conducted, there may be vigils held for special awards called an elevation, and there will most definitely be revelry after the sun goes down. The war hosted by the Outlands is called Battlemoor.

Coronation

Coronation events are when a Kingdom’s reigning monarchs pass the office to their official Heirs, who become the new monarchs. These are usually a two-day event and often feature a feast. They also often feature a combat tournament to determine the members of the new monarchs’ retinue. There are usually two coronations per year, and may or may not involve camping, depending on the weather.

Crown Tournament

Crown Tournaments are how a Kingdom determines the official Heirs to the current throne. These are usually a two-day event, and may or may not involve camping, depending on what time of year the event is held, and the weather at that time. There may or may not be a feast, depending on the venue and the preferences of the event steward. There may also be other tournaments to determine other officers of the Kingdom or in the retinue of the new Heirs.

Candlemas, Twelfthnight, Yule, Midwinter, etc.

There are a number of celebrations held through the winter, modeled after historical feast days. These may or may not involve a feast, but will generally involve fun activities to pass the time and have a good time in each others’ company.

Newcomers

Newcomers celebrations exist to honor people just starting out in the SCA, and provide a place where new members can ask questions, receive guidance, learn, and grow. These events are not JUST for newcomers, and all are welcome to come learn new things or teach the next generation.

Arts & Sciences

Throughout the each year, there are several events specifically focused on the people re-creating medieval arts and sciences. This field can cover sewing, calligraphy and illumination, embroidery, leatherwork, metalwork, beading, making buttons, bone carving, glassmaking, cooking, growing medieval gardens, making medieval sewing equipment, studying how different materials work for reenactment, etc. There is a Kingdom-wide arts and sciences competition, the Kingdom’s arts and sciences symposium, and a known-world arts and sciences symposium that is held online.

Fighter Practice

Fighter practice is a local event held in each local group to help its fighters hone their skills, but practices are open to other attendees. Some groups do all of their combat arts on the same day, while others may hold light fighting practices on different days as their heavy combat practices which may be on a different day as ranged weapons practice for archery and thrown weapons.
